Artist Statement

I like the way colors can convey many meanings and evoke emotions and I am particularly drawn to the natural textures and range of colors found in watercolor pigments. My art is an exploration of the use pigments imbued with the energy of whatever mood I’m in while creating, including the stimuli from the environment I happen to be in and absorb while painting. I approach each piece with a child-like wonder, picking the first color that I am most drawn to in that moment. I exclusively use natural hand ground earth, gemstone, and mineral watercolor pigments and enjoy the natural elements from which these pigments come. I hope to showcase the colors and textures of these unique pigments as each piece comes to life on its own in a natural flow of playful brushstrokes.

I use painting as a way to ponder my thoughts and feelings, and often find it meditative. I have a curiosity about each pigment I use, questioning what it will do and how it will move, as I watch textures dance, disperse, or sink from brushstroke to paper. I allow the colors and textures to flow in their natural fashion and like to think of myself as an observer of their movement, rather than trying to manipulate them to my will. As a result, most of my artworks are rather abstract. Sometimes a movement of brushstroke will feel particularly enjoyable, and there will be repetition of movement. Other times, a piece will seem to fashion itself into a more familiar form such as a flower.

My inspiration comes from many places, such as the natural landscape, the colors of the sky, or the movement in the clouds. And just as equally, mood and emotion set the tone every time I sit down with a piece.  My hope is to transform my emotions into a beautiful and tangible piece of art that elicits emotion in others. At the same time, I want everyone to see the beauty in natural pigments, and I especially enjoy the shimmers and graininess of the gems and minerals I use in painting.
